'Wallis was a gold-digger or prospector of the evening, who never used a fossicking dish or pick to pan her pay dirt.' (written at the time of the Abdication by a contemporary of Wallis from her home town of Baltimore, as recorded in MEPO/10/35 file 17098 in the Public Records Office.) The Public Records Office recently released certain confidential files relating to the Abdication from the Throne in 1936 of King Edward VIII, formerly The Prince of Wales and then to become The Duke of Windsor, which had been withheld pending the death of the late Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth. Among them were documents which appear to be diaries kept during the period by Mrs. Wallis Simpson, later The Duchess Of Windsor. Expertly edited by Helen Batting, this diary for 1934 provides a brilliantly revelatory insight into the thoughts and lifestyle of a woman who was accused of 'setting out to steal the Throne of England'. It is a fascinating glimpse at one of the most significant years in the history of the British Royal Family. Helen Batting is the nom-de-plume of a distinguished British-born historian, novelist, travel writer and freelance journalist. She should not, of course, be confused with the author of "Bridget Jones' Diary", Helen Fielding. Similar editions are now being prepared of the diaries for the years 1935 and 1936, taking them up to the month of the Abdication itself.

I bought this book as a historical document about Wallis Simpson. I found the language strangely modern. I then turned to the inside cover which reads: "This book is a work of fiction All names and persons are either products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously within the historical content of the year 1934." It seems fairly well researched, I could find no websites reviewing it that were in on "the joke," all of them quote the back cover which describes the book as the recently released diaries of Wallis Simpson, expertly edited by the author. Which once you understand, is obviously a joke too, noting that this book is written by "Helen Batting" a "distinguished" novelist, etc who is "not to be confused with the author of Bridget Jones Diary". Apparently the author is a gentleman named Michael Montgomery. In my brief internet search I don't think there were any recently released diaries. Anyhoo-its somewhat hilarious that numerous websites refer to this book using the information from the book jacket in their bibliographies discussing historical works about the famous romance.This is an amusing read once you know what you are reading. A la bridget jones, each chapter is a month, with the title referring to the heroine's progress in her pursuit. Quick, effective language. I personally would have appreciated an effort at more historically correct language. I think I would have reviewed this higher if I started out knowing I was reviewing some biographical fiction, such as The Paris Wife. I personally find it unsatisfying, as I am constantly wondering what is actually based on true knowledge. Once again, the give away is that there are no references at the end of the book.
So I would recommend it as a beach read, if you would like to get one man's take on how the world must have seemed in 1934 London and elsewhere, get a taste of history in with your serving of fiction. Its definitely a step up from the shopaholic series and a lot of the Chick lit of the past 10 years following bridget in terms of writing and story line.

In 1935 the love affair of the American-born Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII of England captured the headlines of newspapers in both countries. On the one hand it was a fairy tale writ large, an attraction of a Baltimore-bred society lady, although a commoner, and a royal, the son of the former King George V and a grandson of Queen Victoria. The story was the stuff of tabloids and magazines.
But the affair had another side too, it shook the foundations of the English establishment -- the government, constitution, and Church. The affair created a new constitutional crisis and raised basic questions about the fabric of the monarchy and the government. It was a crisis akin to the Puritan and Glorious Revolutions of the seventeenth centuries.
Helen Batting, a distinguished and celebrated historian and long familiar with the ways of English politics and the royal family, has exhaustively recounted the love affair with a carefully crafted presentation of Simpson's private Diary for the year 1935. Here we find on its pages the traces of words of endearment between the two lovers, their soical activities, private liasons and interests, and the concerns and disapproval of powerful members of the royal family, the govenment, and the Church. Batting, in this excellent book provides us with an important glimpse of power displayed in the corridors and backstairs at Buckingham Palace, at the Prime Minsiter's residence, and in Parliament. The book is an essential read for an understanding of Englnd's great crisis of the 1930s.
A very honest account and revealing. Wallis was a well educated and bred lady, one who always tried to have an exciting life and never missed an opportunity to raise her financial status.
Although I am always suspect of biographies with a lot of conversations supposedly verbatim this was a delightful memoir. The interweaving of Wallis' horoscopes - true or not - was an inspired tough. Good entertainment!
The inside page says, "This is a work of fiction." I didn't know this until I bought it. I thought it was real.
This book is neither the diary of Wallis Simpson nor a historical representation of her thoughts. It is pure fiction, as it points out in the inside cover of the book. In short, the title is a misrepresentation of the truth, and it should have clearly stated on the cover that it is work of fiction. For not to state this or include this in the first review is a disservice to buyers who are looking for serious historical works. Helen Batting did not edit this book, she fabricated it as fiction as she clearly states "This book is a work of fiction. All names and persons are either products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously within the historical context of the year 1934. Any resemblance to any name or person now existing is therefore entirely coincidental." Any resemblance to historical truth is also coincidental.
